      When an injured
woman arrives at the Museum of Antiquities in  Cairo Rick and
Evelyn O'Connell are not quite sure what they should do.  They
are, after all, on vacation.  When they realises she is attempting
to say the word, "Medjai," they realise, much to Rick's
annoyance,  that they must  ride into the desert and try
to  find their friend Ardeth Bay, leader of the Twelve Tribes of
the Medjai.  Ardeth's reaction, however, is not at all what they

Evans is being held captive by Anton Ferrier who is using her
clairvoyant  abilities to attempt to locate the parts of an
ancient artifact linked with the power of the goddess Usert. 
Whether driven by selfish greed or some other motive Anton becomes a
pawn of a far greater evil when her encourages Meiri to call upon a
power that comes to them during their sessions and they awaken an
ancient princess whose will has been subsumed by a darker goddess than

      Anton's cabal
comes to the attention of the Medjai both during his excavations and as
he tries to bewitch Rashid Khalifah, Ardeth's second in command,
against the Medjai.  However, neither Anton nor his unholy ally
have reckoned on Ardeth's mystical link with the desert's ancient
goddess of life or the discarnate spirit of her consort's high priest
who becomes the reluctant ally of the Medjai against his former
paramour... but who says that you can conjure up the devil and then
